Gibraltar, 1795 Gibraltar to Stockton, England, datelined folded letter endorsed "Via Corunna" at bottom left, rated 8 crossed out and rerated "2/-", red "Andalucia, Vaxa" two-line handstamp and reverse with London transit cds, Very Fine, ex-G. Osborn.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

France has declared war on Great Britain and Spain in early 1793 and the English overland Mails were rerouted through Corunna for the Falmouth Packets.

Lot 114    

Gibraltar, 1807 Gibraltar to Somerset, England, datelined letter rated "3/-" and showing a good strike of the curved framed "Gibraltar" handstamp in a mixture of red and black, F.-V.F. and most unusual, ex-G. Osborn.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

About July 1807, the Packet Agent in Gibraltar, Mr. Hardcastle, acquired a red ink pad and switched to this from the black pad for stamping all mail, whether paid or unpaid. Evidently the stamp was not changed and the existing instrument was used uncleaned, with distinct traces of black showing.

Gibraltar, 1833 Gibraltar to London, England, datelined mourning band folded letter from the Hoste correspondence, rated "2/10" and showing clear strike of curved framed "Gibraltar" handstamp, couple disinfection slits and detained in quarantine at Motherbank (Portsmouth), "FPO, Oc 25, 1833" transit backstamp, letter with content regarding the recent death of the King of Spain, Very Fine.

Gibraltar, 1838-40 Gibraltar folded letters, 3 items each with curved framed "Gibraltar" handstamp; 1838 to London with "5/-" rating, 1838 folded letter sheet (missing a sideflap) to Malta with "2/-" rating, and 1840 folded letter to Dundee, N.B. (New Britain) with "1/-" rating and interesting content including"…Prince Edward arrived yesterday morning and there was a terrible flare of course, fellows in cocked hats and big feathers tearing about in all directions, guns firing, guards of honour and all the rest of it.", F.-V.F.

Gibraltar, 1844 Gibraltar to Canterbury, England, datelined letter with "From Private John Dane, No. 990, 38th Regt." soldier endorsement at top and countersigned by commanding officer at bottom left, with magenta "1" rating and second type curved "Gibraltar, Paid" handstamp, London tombstone date stamp and arrival cds in reverse; some edge staining at right and small tear at bottom, F.-V.F., ex-G. Glassco, G. Osborn & G. Sattin.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Letter from Private Dane, who was in a hospital feigning sickness and which gives details of garrison routine and reference to the Franco-Moroccan War, which ended shortly after the letter was written.
