Graham, Andrew, The Standard Phonographic Visitor, all-over phonography text advertising cover to Washington, D.C. with "Andrew J. Graham, 491 Broadway, New York" imprint at bottom left, franked with 1861 3¢ rose with tied by grid cancel and postmarked "The Dalles, OR Sep 30" cds, from the Cummins correspondence to Washington D.C., "1864" docket at left over part of the text, slightly reduced at right, Very Fine.

Graham, Andrew, The Universal Phonographer, ornate floral bordered Phonography advertising design on buff cover to West Andover, Ohio with "Andrew J. Graham, Editor & Pub. Phoentic Depot, N.Y. City" imprint, franked with 1851 3¢ dull red tied by two part strikes of "Wenona, Ill." straight line postmark, Extremely Fine.
Scott No. 11A    Estimate $300 - 400.

Andrew Jackson Graham (1830-1894), author and teacher of stenography, developed the Graham shorthand system, founded the A.J. Graham Company in New York City, and started The Student Journal.

Graham used a different Phonetic alphabet than Pitman and called himself "The Universal Phonographer". After copyrighting his "Standard Phonographic Dictionary" in 1862, Graham filed a copyright infringement case against Benn Pitman, over shorthand techniques.

Great Britain 1sh green embossed, die 2, for margins, light corner crease, tied by barred numeral "152" cancel on cover to New York City, included is original enclosure written in shorthand, backstamped red Bath cds and green Liverpool transit, also found on reverse is small green diamond label printed in shorthand (partially torn away), Very Fine and choice.

Lindsley, D.P., New York, Short-Hand Writing, advertising corner card extolling the Elements of Takigraphy, on two locally addressed covers (one with typewriter address) franked with different 1877 Brown's City Post locals (Scott #31L3 & 31L5) each tied by Brown's Despatch, Paid circular handstamp; cover soiling and first cover with front repaired and backflap replaced, Fine.

Elias Longley established his business in Cincinnati in 1853, teaching Phonography and phonotype with his self-published manuals. Six varieties of Longley advertising envelopes are known.

Longley Brothers, The Writing and Printing Reform, all-over advertising on cover to Camden, Ohio with imprint of "Longley Brothers, Phonetic Publishers, No. 169½ Walnut St., Cincinnati, O." at bottom, franked with 1851 3¢ dull red tied by indistinct Ohio town cancel, the cover seems to have been missent to Camden, Md. with manuscript "Missent & forwarded" at top left and "Camden Station Aug. 9" postmark and "5 cts" manuscript forwarding postage, cover with flap with advertising text, some cover wear & split along flap fold, included is original enclosure written in shorthand, Very Fine.

Longley & Brother became Longley Brothers in about 1855.

Longley, Elias, To Phonographers, all-over advertising design on cover to Eugene, Ore. with imprint of the "Elias Longley, Cincinnati, Ohio." at bottom, franked with 1857 3¢ dull red (small defect) tied by bold "Cincinnati, O., Feb. 18" double circle duplex cancel; pencil manuscript "Due 7" to complete the 10¢ West Coast rate, additional manuscript "ford Due 3" and totalled to "10 Due", adhesive additional tied by "Eugene, O." cds but with no indication of forwarding destination, slightly reduced at right, Very Fine, an unusual design and usage.
