Andrew Jackson Graham (1830-1894), author and teacher of stenography, developed the Graham shorthand system, founded the A.J. Graham Company in New York City, and started The Student Journal.
Graham used a different Phonetic alphabet than Pitman and called himself "The Universal Phonographer". After copyrighting his "Standard Phonographic Dictionary" in 1862, Graham filed a copyright infringement case against Benn Pitman, over shorthand techniques.

Elias Longley established his business in Cincinnati in 1853, teaching Phonography and phonotype with his self-published manuals. Six varieties of Longley advertising envelopes are known.
