Thomas H. Benton, Senator from Missouri, manuscript frank on 1838 folded letter to attorney in New Orleans, La., red "Washington D.C., Jan 12" cds with matching "Free" handstamp, letter contains note from Senator Benton regarding a law suit…Enclosed are the points six in number, on which I propose to argue the case. Several of them, and especially two last go to the merits., accompanied by printed 1838 Supreme Court plaintiff's statement of the case (See website for images), Very Fine.

Thomas Hart Benton (March 14, 1782 - April 10, 1858), nicknamed "Old Bullion", was an American politician, attorney, soldier, and longtime United States Senator from Missouri. A member of the Democratic Party, he was an architect and champion of westward expansion by the United States, a cause that became known as Manifest Destiny. Benton served in the Senate from 1821 to 1851, becoming the first member of that body to serve five terms.

(Exposition) Yale Lock Man'fg Co., Centennial Model Post Office, Stamford, Ct., dateless circular handstamp with target duplex on 1878 cover franked with 5¢ Bank Note tied by "New York, Oct 7, 78" duplex postmark, cover with printed address "United States Section of Education, Universal Exposition, Paris", backstamped with partial French "Exposition Universelle, Postes & Telegraphe" double circle Expo. postmark, Very Fine and choice, a wonderful cover & one of the great Exposition rarities, only four examples recorded in Bomar; with 2012 P.F. certificate. Harnden, Eastern, Western, and Southern, Express, New York, reddish brown allover illustrated shaded ad cover showing Large Expressman in Town Scene, franked with 1857, 3¢ dull red (clipped corner) tied by "New York, Feb 14, 1861" cds and grid duplex, Very Fine.

United States Express Mail For Albany and Buffalo, folded letter datelined "New York, July 16th, 1842" addressed to railroad tycoon Erastus Corning in Albany enclosing a day before article regarding the expansion of express mail to points west, with letter regarding same, Very Fine, an interesting express mail collateral item.

1932 Olympic Registered Ticket Cover, printed Olympic Games Ticket Dept corner card cover franked with 9¢ Meter pair canceled by mute oval handstamp, to Huntington Park, Cal. with "Xth Olympiad Ticket Department, Los Angeles 1932" tape sealing reverse, L.A. and receiving backstamps, Very Fine; with 2010 P.F. certificate.

New York Incoming "Ship" Covers, 1820-51, two covers; 1820 folded letter to Boston, Mass. with red "New York, Feb 6" cds, matching "Ship" handstamp and manuscript "20" rate, reverse with bold "Forwarded by Y.O.S.ts., Maury & Latham of Liverpool" boxed handstamp, and 1851 folded letter sheet Livorno, Italy to Washington D.C. with "New York, Ship 7cts, Jul 25" cds, with Livorno railroad cds at right and "7cts" cross-out as the letter was sent to the Treasury Dept. on official business, Very Fine.

1830 Guadeloupe to Philadelphia, Pa., folded letter addressed to the French Consul, privately carried to the U.S. and entered the mails with red "New York, Aug 16" cds with matching "Ship" handstamp and "12" rating (10¢ inland plus 2¢ ship fee), and "2nd Delivery" handstamp for later arrival from the ship, Extremely Fine; with 2022 P.F. certificate.

1859 (Dec. 9) Charleston, S.C. to Barcelona, Spain, printed circular of Hall & Co. with "Charleston S.C. 'Paid' Dec 10, 1859" origin cds, New York large red "2" cent credit to U.K., carried by Cunard Line Europa from Boston Dec. 14 to Queenstown arriving Dec. 25, Barcelona "½ Rs." reales due rating, some paper aging, Fine and scarce use.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

When the newspaper rate to most European destinations was reduced in April 1853 from 4¢ to 2¢, Spain was not included and 4¢ rate remained until early 1860. Charleston indicated that the newspaper rate was paid but did not show the amount. New York credited the U.K. with 2¢ using a red handstamp. Barcelona marked ½ real postage due using characteristic script-style handstamp.

1875 New York Foreign Mail Covers to Havana, Cuba, four covers from the S. Corte Real correspondence; includes 10¢ Banknote (161) single and double rate usage with NYFM Fouled Anchor cancellation (Weiss RE-E4), other two sent in April with rare rare short-lived 12-Point Circular Geometric NYFM handstamp (Weiss GE-EP6, known used 4/21-6/21, only three covers recorded by Kirke), also includes N.Y. drop cover from correspondence; two covers with opening tears one affecting franking and some edge toning (See website for images), F.-V.F.
