Chungking, 1894, 2ca blue, illustrated postal card, addressed to Augustine Henry of the Imperial Maritime Customs in Mong-tse Yunnan "via Haiphong", with purple Chungking, 28 Sep 96 boxed date stamp and Laokay, Tonkin, 10 Nov, 96 transit cds; light vertical crease and some light tone spots, F.-V.F., a rare and extraordinary usage, this is the only recorded item to Yunnan transiting through Vietnam.Estimate $750 - 1,000.
There was no direct route to Montze so this card was carried down river to Shanghai, then by paquetboat and rail to Haiphong and to its destination.

Shelton, Ta Chien Lu, Via Chung King, West China", franked with 1903, 5¢ blue (304) tied by "Cincinnati, O., Oct 7, 1908" machine postmark, with original enclosure, and 1910 cover addressed "Batang, W. China, Via Ta Chienlu, Via Chung King" and franked with 1908, 5¢ blue (335) tied by "Cincinnati, O., Jul 14, 1910" machine postmark, both with various transit cancels including "U.S. Postal Sta., Shanghai, China" cds's, also includes 1909 letter from correspondence with some interesting content; covers reduced (one rough) and some slight soiling, F.-V.F., an interesting pair of covers to Tibet.Estimate $400 - 600.
Dr. A.L. Shelton was the first American to set up a Tibetian Mission Center and hospital in Tachien lu and Batung.
