Pacific Mail Steamship Co. Cancellations on Revenue Issues, 1862-72, remarkable collection of 108 stamps bearing the straight line P.M.S.S. steamer name cancellations on First to Third issue revenues; arranged on pages by the lines and ship names, starting with the Pacific Line with cancels including the Constitution (1), Golden City (2), Montana (6) and Sacramento (2) including one on a $5 Probate of Will issue, the China Line including Alaska (10), America (10) including on $5 Charter Party imperf, China (4), Colorado (2), Great Republic (4) and Japan (13) showing three different handstamp types, Shanghai Branch Line with rare Costa Rica (1) and Oregonian (3), and the Atlantic Line with Arizona (8, 1st & 3rd issues), Henry Chauncey (12, 1st, 2nd with red cancel & 3rd issues), rare New York (1), Ocean Queen (13, 1st-3rd issues) with possibly unique 25¢ (2nd issue) usage from any steamer line, and Rising Sun (17, 1st-3rd issues); includes some additional material including three different P.M.S.S. date stamp handstamp on first issues revenues (one from San Francisco), couple stock certificates, unused bank check, S.S. Colorado bill of lading with revenue and company handstamp, etc.; condition a bit varied with clear strike or strikes throughout, generally F.-V.F. or better, all are ex-Tolman with some additional items added.

Hawaii, 1893, Provisional Govt., 6¢ green, Black Overprint Error, rich color, attractive margins, hint of single toned perf tip at bottom left, still wonderfully fresh & Very Fine, ex-Atherton; signed blue "W.H.C." (Colson) backstamp.

A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1893 6¢ BLACK OVERPRINT ERROR IN THIS EXCEPTIONALLY FRESH, ORIGINAL GUM CONDITION.

Two errors of the 1893 Provisional Government Overprint Issues were made. One sheet of the 10¢ Red Brown, normally overprinted in black, was overprinted in red (Scott 61B) and one sheet of the 6¢ Green, normally overprinted in red, was overprinted in black (Scott 66C). The 6¢ sheet was purchased by Postmaster Jos. M. Oat and sometime around 1901 most of it was sold to dealer J. H. Makins, probably on behalf of Henry J. Crocker. The San Francisco earthquake is said to have destroyed a number of examples of both the overprint errors.

Hawaii, 1893, Provisional Govt., 10¢ red brown, red overprint, o.g., hinge remnant, rich vibrant color, centered to the lower left with design clear of perfs, small thin, Fine appearance, ex-Golden; with 1946 & 2011 P.F. certificates.

A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 10¢ RED OVERPRINT ERROR. ONLY ONE SHEET OF FIFTY WAS ISSUED.

Accompanied by a photocopy of a 1904 letter from J. H. Makins, a San Francisco stamp dealer, to collector Percy T. Morgan in regards to Morgan's purchase the overprint errors and relaying Makins' understanding of their origin. Also included a photocopy of an affidavit on Makins & Co. letterhead from Postmaster Oat certifying that he procured the only sheet of the 6¢ error ever produced.

It is believed that eight examples were destroyed from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and that less than forty examples are in existence.

American Postal Machine Co., "Seattle Wash Exposition Station Jun. 23 1-PM, 1909", bold strike with "Alaska-Yukon Exposition" flag machine cancel ties 1¢ blue green (300) on multicolored Mines building expo postcard to Sedro-Woolley Wash.; light toning, Very Fine and rare, ex-Heimburger.
Estimate    $3,000 - 4,000.

ONE OF THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE ALASKA-YUKON EXPOSITION FLAG MACHINE CANCEL, ONE OF THE KEY EXPOSITION POSTMARKS.

One of the other two recorded examples of this rare postal marking realized $9,000 hammer in the first Brody sale held by Shreves.

Leavitt Machine, "Boston, Mass. Nov. 15" Prototype Cancel, clear strike cancels 1¢ postal card (UX5) to East Pepperell Mass., preprinted ad message for Bigelow Portable Engine and Boiler, Very Fine and choice.

ONE OF TWO RECORDED TESTS OF THE LEAVITT PROTOTYPE MACHINE CANCEL.

Leavitt tested a prototype device on November 15, 1875, seven weeks before the first regular machine was placed in service. The cancel was composed of dashed lines and only one cork killer was used. Two examples are known, the post card offered here and a cover.

Mexico, Official, 1898, Mulitas, 10p deep blue, "Muesta" overprint, o.g., hinge remnant, exceptional centering, deep rich color, Extremely Fine and choice, this is the rarest of the Mulitas, with 4-5 exist without and 3-4 exist with the "Muestra" overprint.

Hawaii, 1857, King Kamehameha III, 5¢ manuscript surcharge on 13¢ dark red, with Clark manuscript (Type I), no gum, margins full to just in at top, strong bright color, Fine and rare; with 1959 P.F. certificate.

A RARE SOUND UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5¢ ON 13¢ PROVISIONAL SURCHARGE.

The 5¢ provisional surcharge was necessary due to a shortage of 5¢ stamps just after the transition from Postmaster Whitney to Jackson. Most were made by Jackson's clerk, Alvah Clark, around the start of 1857. New supplies of the 5¢ stamp (Scott No. 8) were received at the end of June 1857.

Lot 43    

Canada, 1801 River Ouelle to Greenock, Scotland, folded letter sent by Liveright Piuze datelined "River Ouelle, Oct. 23, 1801", entered the mails with bold "Ship Letter, Quebec" crown oval handstamp, with manuscript "per Juno" ship endorsement at lower left, carried to Scotland and struck with similar "Ship Letter, Greenock" crown oval handstamp in red, manuscript "4" rated upon arrival; trivial small tear at top center, Very Fine and choice, a wonderful early transatlantic usage bearing matching crown oval handstamp on letter sent during the Napoleonic Wars, ex-Steinhart.
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

The sender, Liveright Piuze (1754-1813), served as a surgeon in the American Revolutionary War.
