1798, First Federal Issue, 20¢ Connecticut, strong detailed strike on note of $550 for 60 days dated November 21, 1799, debtors name was torn off when the note was paid, note written on reverse side of stamp; file fold through stamp, F.-V.F., rare with only seven stamps recorded in census, ex-Joyce.

1798, First Federal Issue, $1 Connecticut, choice detailed impression at top left of partially printed Norwich Mutual Assurance Company insurance policy with central red brown illustration of fireman on early fire wagon hosing out a building fire dated February 26, 1801 just eight days before the stamp was invalid, insurance for ¾ of a building value at $675 for a cost of $1.48; some splitting along file folds, a Very Fine and choice impression, very rare with only eight stamps recorded, ex-Joyce.

1798, First Federal Issue, 4¢ Delaware, two documents all with strong stamp impressions; includes partially printed domestic bill of lading dated March 10, 1800, and on a hand written promissory note dated January 1, 1800; the former with file fold and sealed tear affecting stamp, F.-V.F. overall, rare with only nineteen stamps recorded.

Lot 1044

1798, First Federal Issue, 10¢ Maryland, strong impression on Writ of Manumission (declaration of freedom for a slave) dated May 17, 1800, with portion of text reading…"that I Priscilla Foster for and in Consideration of the Love and good will and affection which I have and bear towards my loving Friend Dello Miller my negro women of Price George County State of Maryland have given…do freely Clearly and absolutely give and grant to the said Dello Miller her…Freedom…absolutely without any manner of condition…"; some edge toning and wear at right, F.-V.F., ex-Combs.

AN EXTREMELY RARE A POSSIBLY UNIQUE DECLARATION OF FREEDOM FOR A SLAVE THROUGH WRIT OF MANUMISSION ON A FIRST FEDERAL ISSUE DOCUMENT.

No other stamped manumissions have been reported and it is probably unique. Maryland was a slave state until after the Civil War.

1798, First Federal Issue, 25¢ Maryland, strong detailed impression on promissory note of $625 for 60 days dated September 24, 1800, some additional text removed from bottom of paper, Very Fine, very rare with only nine stamps reported, ex-Joyce.

1798, First Federal Issue, $1 Maryland, strong sharp detailed impression on partially printed Baltimore Insurance Company insurance policy for ship Sally from Baltimore to England, policy was reassigned to a third party on an attached document, Very Fine and choice.

BY FAR THE FINEST OF TWO KNOWN EXAMPLES OF THE $1 MARYLAND FIRST FEDERAL ISSUE ON INSURANCE DOCUMENT THAT IS IN EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION.

The other example is light discernible impression on a hand written bill of sale with file fold through the stamp impression (ex-Joyce & Antizzo). The Combs survey lists three examples however these two are the only examples that are currently known. (see website for complete images).
