France, 1872 (Jul. 3) Bordeaux to New Orleans, La., folded letter franked with 1871, 25c blue, two singles tied by dotted lozenge handstamps, matching "Bordeaux, Jul 3, 1872" cds, reverse with Paris transit, posted on board the steamer St. Laurent with "Corr. D. Arm., Lig. H Paq. F., Juil 6, 72" transit backstamp, "N.Y. Steamship, 10, Jul. 18" entry cds and "Due 10" in pencil at bottom, Very Fine, the only recorded example of the "Corr. D. Arm." Ligne H marking, reviewed and illustrated in The Chronicle (#247, page 275).

France, 1867, Napoleon III Laureate, 30c brown on yellowish, two singles, on folded letter to New Orleans, La., tied by dotted lozenge handstamps with matching "Bordeaux, Janv 27, 1870" origin cds, reverse with "Ligne H, Paq. Fr. No. 3, 29 Janv 70" cds, "N.Y. Steamship 10 Feb. 14" transit cds, Very Fine, carried aboard the steamer Ville de Paris, departing Brest on January 29th 1870 and arriving in New York on February 13th, reviewed and illustrated in The Chronicle (#247, page 271). Yvert Nos. 30.

Lot 100    

France, 1870, Ballon Monté The "Daguerre" (Jettisoned Mail), folded Gazette de Absenis, No. 6 to Bordeaux franked with 20c Empire Lauré tied by dotted lozenge handstamp, matching "Paris, 9 Nov, 70" cds at center and reverse with "Bordeaux, 29 Nov, 70" receiving backstamp, Very Fine and choice. Yvert Nos. 28.
Scott Nos. BM28    Estimate $300 - 400.

"Le Daguerre" was piloted by Sylvain Jubert with a freight of 270 kgs, landing later the same day (12 Nov.) with the pilot, passengers & mail all captured - the latter released after conclusion of the war - one mail bag was jettisoned, recovered by the French Guard at Ferrières and transmitted with arrival postmarks from the 20th of November to the 29th.

Lot 101 ()   

France, 1871, Ballon Monté The "Général Faidherbe", cover front to Washington City (D.C.) endorsed "Par Ballon monte", franked with 1870 10c bister, two singles + 20c dull blue, two singles (54+57) tied by dotted star handstamps, with matching "Paris, Janv 12, 71" origin cds's, red "Insufficient Postage" handstamp yet accepted for the British mail 70c rate, red London and New York transit cds's; some small stamp and front flaws, F.-V.F. appearance, believed to be the only Ballon Monté usage from besieged Paris and fully prepaid for the direct route to the United States, illustrated in The Chronicle (#247, page 282). Yvert Nos. 59.
Scott Nos. BM59    Estimate $500 - 750.

Carried by the General Faidherbe out of Paris on January 14th and and landed near Bordeaux. This was sent via England and apparently not charged for the deficiency (10 centimes).

France, 1871, Ballon Monté The "Poste de Paris", folded letter to Bourbon Lancy, franked with 1870, Siege of Paris, 20c blue (Scott 57) tied by "12" in dotted lozenge handstamp with matching "Paris, 17 Janv, 1871" cds alongside, receiving postmark on reverse, lengthy letter with fascinating content regarding the war (in French)…"The bombardment continues with rage from the Prussians and at this moment when I write, the Prussians are invading the neighborhood of the Left Bank", give statics of people killed, etc., Very Fine, accompanied by English translation of letter. Yvert Nos. 62.
