France, 1853 (Apr. 14) Bordeaux, France to San Francisco, Cal., small red double line "Bordeaux (32) 14 Avril 53" cds on folded letter, red British "Paid E J 16ap16 1853" transit cds and handstamp "20" cents due, "Par Estemer voi de Panama" routing, Paris transit cds on the reverse and "25" decimes rate, with additional two line routing instructions 25 decimes rate per quarter ounce to England & closed mail from England to San Francisco via the U.S., 20 cents per half ounce steamship rate from New York to San Francisco, Very Fine.

France, 1853, 40c orange on yellowish, two folded covers from the same correspondence to Boston from Paris in 1854, 1st is franked with 1853, 40c orange on yellowish, pair with large margins, tied by lozenge cancel, 2nd franked with 1853 40c strip of 3 (large margins) + 10c tied by lozenge, small corner bend affecting pair & strip, Very Fine, an attractive pair of covers. Lot 95    

France, 1864 (June 14) Bordeaux to San Francisco, Cal., folded letter tied by 1862, 80c rose, horizontal pair tied by "532" dotted lozenge handstamp with matching "Bordeaux, Juin 14, 64" cds, red "6" credit handstamp and "New York Paid 30 Jun. 28" entry cds, light "Fr. Service" in octagon handstamp and Paris transit backstamp; stamps with minor perf flaws, otherwise Very Fine, the only surviving cover from the first Compagnie Generale Transatlantique Line sailing, ex-Winter and Walske, illustrated and reviewed in The Chronicle (#246, page 175).
Scott Nos. 28    Estimate $500 - 750.

This was carried on the maiden voyage of the "Washington", the first sailing of the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique Line. It departed Le Havre on June 15th 1864 and arrived in New York on June 29th (with New York arrival date stamp in error).

France, 1868 (Oct. 8) Brest to New York, N.Y., folded letter datelined "Brest 10, 8th, 1868" franked with 1868, 20c blue, horizontal strip of four tied by dotted anchor lozenge handstamp with matching "Ligne H, Paq. Fr. No. 4, Oct 8, 68" cds, red "3" credit handstamp and "New York, Paid All, Oct 21" entry cds; corner nick in right stamp and vertical file fold affecting third stamp, F.-V.F., a rare on board transatlantic posting, ex-Schatzkes & Walske, illustrated and reviewed in The Chronicle (#246, page 181); with 1986 Robineau certificate.

This cover handled by the mail agent of the steamship "Pereire" at Brest which departed Le Havre on October 8th of 1868 and arrived in New York on October 21st.

France, 1871 (May 11) Le Harve to New York, folded letter franked with 1871, 20c blue on bluish + 1870, 30c brown on yellowish, four singles (45+46) tied by dotted lozenge handstamps with matching "Le Havre, Mai 11, 1871" origin cds, "N.Y. Steamship 10 May 24" entry cds; file fold affecting two stamps and one other with minor crease, otherwise Very Fine, a rare Bordeaux issue overseas usage intended for the British mails (70c rate) but sent by French packet, illustrated in The Chronicle (#246, page 283). Yvert Nos. 46B+47.
