Leavitt Machine, "Boston, Mass. Sep 30, 81", Type X1B, clear strike ties 1¢ blue (182) on blue cover to North Scituate Mass., four visible pin marks from the upper group present, Very Fine, the earliest recorded use.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The type X1B cancels are associated with pin punctures in two groups of four, with the two groups separated by about 23mm. The canceller is a new design: a combination of a barred oval with a D (the only recorded service letter) and eight short bars. Known from September 30 to December 20, 1881.

Leavitt Machine, "Boston, Mass. Jan 10", Type X2B, neat strike ties 1¢ gray blue (206) on 1882 illustrated A.H. Roffe & Co's Subscription Agency corner card cover to Snowville Va., Very Fine, Only Two Recorded Examples (the other being a cover front)..
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Ten days into 1882, the '82 year slug had not been received and the old slug was inverted. Ten days later, the new slug was in place. The second recorded example was a cover front offered in Rumsey sale 52 lot 1394.

Leavitt Machine, "Boston, Mass. Jan 30, 82", Type X2B strike with serrated bar killer ties 1¢ gray blue (206) on unsealed D.L. Guernsey Publisher all-over illustrated advertising cover to East Bethel Vt., "Royalton Vt. Jan 31" transit backstamp, original printed enclosure; some edge wear, Very Fine and attractive.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The position of the pins (one tears cover) confirm that a different machine was in use. The markings are those of Group 3, a design with two groups of three pins, an arrangement previously reported in two machines used concurrently for about a month in Philadelphia and Baltimore. The downward tilt of the canceller suggest that that the Baltimore machine was later used in Boston (see the X1A Baltimore use).

Leavitt Machine, "Boston Mass.", Type X3A, Die A with 17 bar canceller having a 6mm. channel, ties 1¢ gray blue (206) on third-class fancy "Raymond's Vacation Excursions" corner card cover to Belfast Me., corner card; no flap, F.-V.F. and scarce.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The Boston Leavitt Type X3A is known used only from September 1882.

Leavitt Machine, "Buffalo, N.Y., Aug 6, 10 PM", type B-BUF (D) transposed dies canceling on 1¢ Jefferson postal card (UX9) with pre-printed notice on reverse, to Caledonia, N.Y., Very Fine, very rare with only three examples recorded, ex-Patkin & Fowke.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

It is believed that in an attempt to correct an inking problem, the clerk transposed the dial and canceller dies for at least two days - August 6th & 7th of 1891.

Leavitt Machine, "Indianapolis Ind. Feb 25, 1886", Type CT machine cancel on 1¢ postal card (UX8) to Cincinnati Oh.; toning band at top, Fine and rare, the earliest recorded date of use.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The Indianapolis Type CT machine was always partially struck, the example offered here is one of the finest strikes. (Payne J $600-800).

Dec 3 '81", type X1A, bold strike ties 1¢ gray blue (206), couple trivial toned perfs, on unsealed legal-size all-over printed advertising cover addressed to Grand Ledge, Michigan, advertisement for the Farm Journal, Very Fine and scarce use on last day (Rarity K).
Estimate    $500 - 750.

This experimental machine was used only on December 2-3, 1881.
