1875, 2¢ vermilion, C.B.N.C. printing, deep intense color, tied by N.Y.F.M. geometric handstamp on printed circular to Genova, Italy dated May 30, 1876, Very Fine, an extremely rare example of this New York Foreign Mail handstamp, one of two of the earliest strikes of only four on cover examples recorded by Weiss. Weiss Nos. GE-C8.

Lot 621    

1881, 1¢ gray blue, block of 88, strip of 6 and strip of 3, all manuscript canceled on oversize linen lined cover (block on reverse) to "The Collector of the Port, New York" with printed "From United States Consulate General, Shanghai, China", lower left with "Fifty two Invoices" docketing, reverse with light "U.S. Postal Agency, Shanghai" oval date stamp and three strikes of red "San Francisco, Cal., Paid All, Mar 10" transit cds's, circular "3-10-88" receiving handstamp tying block; cover chipping and wear, stamps with usual flaws and some separation in block mostly due to Consulate wax seals with possible stamp removed from cover between strips, F.-V.F. for this.

1881, 1¢ gray blue, small flaws, cork canceled on cover to Canastota, N.Y. with red Prof. Carl Myers illustrated Balloon advertising corner card, "Mohawk, N.Y., Apr 17" postmark, Very Fine, a lovely cover from this pioneer balloonist; with 1998 P.F. certificate.

Carl Myers in the late 1880's created the Balloon Farm, a Victorian mansion on a hill south of Frankfort overlooking the Mohawk Valley. It housed one of the most successful private experiments in early aeronautics ever launched.

1917, 5¢ rose color error, perf 11, bottom stamp in vertical pair with normal 1917, 2¢ rose (499) uprating on 2¢ red legal size entire to Keokuk, Iowa with Bank corner card, tied by "Horton, Kans., Dec 4, 1917" cds and barr killer duplex; entire flaws including small tears and some toning, F.-V.F., a scarce commercial and se-tenant usage.
