1862, 5¢ red brown, horizontal strip of 3, hidden defect affects right stamp, used with 1861, 3¢ rose + 10¢ green (65, 68), tied by grid cancels, also tied by red New York and Aachen transits on tissue-paper cover to Berlin, Prussia, postmarked "Portland Me. Dec. 16 1862" double-circle datestamp, cover with edge tears and nicks typical of this thin paper (reinforced with archival tape and card), otherwise Very Fine, strips of the 5¢ Red Brown are exceedingly scarce.

1862, 5¢ dark red brown, rich dark true shade, tied by neat circular grid handstamp on 1862 folded letter sheet to Madrid, Spain, red "N. York Br. Pkt., Paid, Jun 18" exchange cds and blue 8rs due handstamp, reverse with red "London, Jl 28, 62" transit, entry and receiving backstamps; sheet with left side flap missing, Very Fine, a very rare shade which catalogs $1000 off cover; with 2023 P.F. certificate.

Pkt., Paid, Nov 30" exchange cds, large "4R" due handstamp applied upon arrival, red London transit and receiving backstamps, Very Fine, sent via British packet and carried on the Cunard's Australasian, ex-Herst & Littauer.
