Steamboat Marking Covers, 1820-45, group of four stampless folded letters; includes 1820 N.Y. to Albany with manuscript Steam Boat endorsement, 1829 Hartford, Ct. to N.Y. with small red "Steam Boat" straight line handstamp, 1833 N.Y. to Albany with red two-line "Steam Boat" and 1845 N.Y. to Boston with red "Steamer 5" in oval handstamp, generally Very Fine.

1741 London to Philadelphia via Boston, folded letter sheet addressed to John Kinsey Esq., Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Province of Philadelphia, rated "B.Sh 7.16 dwt. gr.", endorsed "via Boston pr. Capt. Shepherdon" at bottom left, from "Richard Partridge, London, 2 missing only. 1st" agent of the Pennsylvania Assembly of Quakers and a close associate of Benjamin Franklin, Very Fine.

1843 (Jul. 17) Malaga, Spain to Boston, Mass., folded letter carried privately to Gibraltar where posted with "Gibraltar/Paid" framed handstamp and red manuscript "2/11" 2s11d prepaid single packet rate, Liverpool (7.31) backstamp, carried by Cunard Line Hibernia from Liverpool Aug. 4 to Boston arriving Aug. 17, Boston red "Ship 6" fancy due handstamp, Very Fine and scarce rating.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

P&O steamship "Oriental" of the of the Alexandria Line carried letter to Falmouth. 2s/11s was special rate established by Treasury Warrant of September 1840 for letters to U.S. from Gibraltar not going through London.

Lot 425    

(Restored Rates) 1848 (Dec. 31) Malaga, Spain to Boston, Mass., folded letter with blue octagonal "Consulate/U.S./Malaga" handstamp sent unpaid to London where "10" pence postage paid, reposted with red "Paid 12 JA" postmark and red manuscript "1" shilling prepaid packet rating, carried on Cunard Line Europa from Liverpool Jan. 13 to New York arriving Jan. 29, red "New York 'Ship 7cts' Jan 30" cds for 5¢ inland postage plus 2¢ ship fee, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Letter sent overland via Madrid and Paris to London where Baring Brothers & Co. paid postage due and remailed letter to Boston. Letter carried on 2nd of 4 Cunard mail westbound voyages to the U.S. during six week period when pre-retaliatory rates were resumed before U.S.-G.B. postal convention became effective. Two voyages went to Boston and two to New York.

1850 (Jun. 24) Boston, Mass. to Cadiz, Spain, folded letter with Boston "Paid" handstamp in red and pencil "41" rating for the British mail rate for ¼ oz letter via France, magenta "36" cent credit to U.K., carried by Cunard Line Canada from Boston June 26 to Liverpool arriving July 7, London Paid (7.8) transit, Cadiz arrival backstamp and large red "11R" reales due rating handstamp, Very Fine, a scarce British mail rate to Spain.

1850 (Jul. 1) New York, N.Y. to Cadiz, Spain, blue folded letter with pencil "73" prepaid rating and magenta "52" credit rating, carried by Collins Line Pacific New York Jul. 6 to Liverpool arriving Jul. 17, red London (7.18) transit, red Cadiz (8.3) arrival backstamp; very light stain, Very Fine, The only recorded example of the 73¢ rate via Southampton route carried transatlantic by American contract steamship.

1852 (Feb. 3) Baltimore, Md. to Naples, Italy, cover with blue Feb. 3 origin cds and matching "Paid" handstamp with "24" manuscript rate, endorsed "Liverpool m. Steamer", red "3" credit handstamp crossed out and red Paris exchange, Genova cachet handstamp and receiving backstamp, Very Fine.

1853 (Sep. 6) Vigo, Spain to Kingston, Mass., folded letter with British Post Office "Vigo, SP 10 1853" origin date stamp, letter carried by P&O Steamer Iberia to Southampton, reverse with red London (9.15) transit and manuscript "2/2" postage due comprising (52¢) packet fee to G.B. plus 8d (16¢) transatlantic fee, carried by Cunard Line America from Liverpool Sep. 17 to Boston arriving Oct. 1, "Boston Br. Pkt. Oct 1" exchange cds with manuscript "73" due rating (68¢ plus 5¢ U.S. inland); some minor edge toning, F.-V.F., the only recorded example of 73¢ British mail rate from Spain to U.S.

1858 (Dec. 31) Charleston, S.C. to Tarragona, Spain, folded letter with blue "Charge Box 625 H & Co." straightline, "Charleston S.C. Dec 31 1858" origin cds with matching "Paid" handstamp and manuscript "21" rating, "New York 'Paid 18' Jan 5" exchange handstamp with credit obliterated and restruck "Br. Pkt." exchange cds, carried by Cunard Line Asia from New York Jan. 5 to Liverpool arriving Jan. 16, London (1.17) arrival backstamp, Tarragona (1.22) arrival backstamp with "4 Rs" reales due handstamp; light vertical fold, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter paid 21¢ for a single rate (¼ oz) letter by French mail. New York credited France 18¢ with the exchange office datestamp, then realized letter weighed more than ¼ oz. and required two rates. The credit was obliterated and the letter sent in the British open mail by British packet (5¢ rate), a 16¢ overpayment. London sent letter through France to Spain, where it was marked for 4 reales postage due, the rate for a single letter (less than 7½ grams). Letter must have weighed over ¼ oz. (7.08 grams) and under 7.5 grams.

1859 (Dec. 9) Charleston, S.C. to Barcelona, Spain, printed circular of Hall & Co. with "Charleston S.C. 'Paid' Dec 10, 1859" origin cds, New York large red "2" cent credit to U.K., carried by Cunard Line Europa from Boston Dec. 14 to Queenstown arriving Dec. 25, Barcelona "½ Rs." reales due rating, some paper aging, Fine and scarce use.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

When the newspaper rate to most European destinations was reduced in April 1853 from 4¢ to 2¢, Spain was not included and 4¢ rate remained until early 1860. Charleston indicated that the newspaper rate was paid but did not show the amount. New York credited the U.K. with 2¢ using a red handstamp. Barcelona marked ½ real postage due using characteristic script-style handstamp.
