1847, 5¢ red brown, margins huge to close at top right, tied by red "Philada Rail Road" straight line handstamp on 1849 folded letter from Trenton to the Post Master of New York, with second strike of handstamp at center; cover folds and small soil spot at top right slightly affecting stamp, F.-V.F., ex-Grinnell & Mirsky; with 2001 P.F. certificate.

1857, 1¢ blue, type V, vertical pair, well centered, tied by partial New Orleans "Sep 5, 1860" cds on blue folded circular to Amsterdam, printed "Printed Circular, Per first Steamer from New York." endorsement at top left, blue "1½c. Amsterdam" triangle backstamp, Dutch ms. "" Dutch cents due rating, magenta "1860" notation; couple minor stain spots, Very Fine and scarce use at the 2¢ British open mails newspaper rate.

Amsterdam applied triangular "1½ c., Amsterdam" handstamp for the fiscal tax on all printed matter from foreign countries.

1857, 3¢ Morocco red, type III, rich distinctive color, tied by "Springfield Mass." cds on cover to Dover Plains, N.Y.; reduced slightly at left, otherwise Very Fine; signed Amonette as "Morocco red" on reverse, with 2010 P.F. certificate.

1857, 12¢ black, plate I, vertical pair, used with 3¢ dull red (26), tied by two strikes of "Augusta Ga. Sep 28, 1859" cds on cover to Geneva, Switzerland at the 27¢ Bremen mail rate, red "New York 'Paid' Oct 1" exchange cds with magenta "24" cent credit rating, carried by NGL Line Bremen from New York Oct. 1st to Bremen arriving Oct. 18th, blue three-line "America/Über Bremen/Franco" handstamp, red crayon "Wfr 5" updated with "2" and finally "6" due; minor perf toning, colorful range of markings, Very Fine and scarce 1857 issue use prepaying the 27¢ rate to Switzerland via Bremen, ex-Knapp.
Scott No. 36    Estimate $500 - 750.

The fully prepaid rate to Switzerland via Bremen was 27¢ from 1857 to 1860. It dropped to 19¢ when Th. & T. eliminated its transit fee. A prepaid letter was charged a flat fee of 4¢ Swiss postage, but the actual cost was based upon distance.
