Hawaii, 1853, 5¢ blue, thick white paper, margins huge showing small portions of adjacent stamps to just in at bottom right, canceled by red grid handstamp on 1855 cover to New London, Ct., with matching "Honolulu, Hawaiian Islands, July 3" cds, "San Francisco, Cal., Aug 1" cds with straight line "Ship" and "12" rate handstamps; partial backflap and trivial faint vertical file folds, Very Fine, ex-Krug & Golden; signed Ashbrook, with 1958 P.F. certificate.

A LOVELY EXAMPLE OF THE 1853 5¢ KAMEHAMEHA III ISSUE PREPAYING HAWAIIAN POSTAGE ON COVER TO THE UNITED STATES.

Carried aboard the bark "Yankee", which departed Honolulu July 3rd 1855 and arrived in San Francisco on July 28th. It was then sent via Panama on the "Golden Age". (Gregory census no. 5-11).

All known examples of the 1853 5¢ and 13¢ black trial color proofs are cut in and/or faulty. The example offered here is one of the finer appearing examples of the 13¢ value.
